Our Dirty Little Secrets

In this life, change is constant. Nothing lasts forever. Food spoils, machines break down, and eventually things reach the end of their usefulness. We throw away items that no longer serve our needs, but have you ever stopped to think about where all that waste goes?
Some people carelessly toss trash from their car windows or drop litter while walking down the street, leaving someone else to deal with the mess. I used to fuss at my girls whenever they threw gum on the ground without wrapping it. It may seem like a small thing, but that sticky gum can end up on the bottom of someone's brand-new shoes. What seems harmless to one person can become an inconvenience for another.
Our planet is becoming increasingly polluted with waste. Think about the packaging from every product we purchase, along with the plastic utensils, paper products, and countless disposable items we throw away each week. The amount of garbage we generate is staggering.
Yet, many of us rarely think about the people who faithfully handle that waste.
Garbage collectors are an essential part of our communities. Week after week, while many of us are still asleep, they arrive to remove the evidence of our consumption—our "dirty little secrets." Their work may not be glamorous, but without them, our neighborhoods would quickly become overwhelmed with trash.
These hardworking men and women play a vital role in protecting public health and keeping our communities clean, healthy, and safe. They deserve our respect and appreciation.
National Garbage Man Day is observed each year on June 17. Established in 2011 by John D. Arwood, this day honors garbage collectors, sanitation workers, and waste management professionals for the invaluable service they provide to our communities.
Now that we know, let's take a moment to show our appreciation. Put a thank-you sign in your yard, leave a case of cold water or sports drinks for your sanitation crew, or simply offer a friendly wave and a smile. Small acts of kindness can brighten someone's day and remind them that their work matters.
After all, the people who faithfully collect our garbage every week deserve to know that their hard work does not go unnoticed.
A Final Thought
Sometimes the people who make the greatest difference are the ones we notice the least. May we never take for granted those who faithfully serve our communities with humility, dedication, and care. Gratitude costs us nothing, but it can mean everything to someone else.
With Love & Prayer,
